A340 MSN001 BLADE - Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe

The CLEANSKY Joint Technology Initiative is a Public-Private Partnership between the EC and Industry with the aim to improve aircraft in all areas.

The BLADE programme involved the attachment of NLF (Natural Laminar Flow) Wings to an AIRBUS A340-300 demonstrator aircraft.

Sitec were initially engaged by Airbus to define the transition structure between the existing Airframe and the new experimental wing and support integration of the new structure developed by partners throughout Europe. Sitec’s scope of activity grew to include defining the new trailing edge, Ailerons, all systems design (Fuel, Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Electrics) and FTI for the outer wing including the development of new technologies. Integration roles also including build support at the Airbus facility in Tarbes, France. After 6 successful years engaged on this programme, the team that grew to a maximum of 55 engineers at the peak of the design delivery phase look forward to the first flight in the second half of 2017.
