Sitec is urgently looking for a Control Units Engineer for a multinational Aerospace Organisation based in Derby.
Role
You will to manage the specification, design, qualification and certification of accessories that are designed and supplied by external companies. These are hardware components for control systems on an engine. It involves design approval, development engineering, technical report writing and a strong element of programme management. The role also includes responsibility for ensuring the suppliers achieve company manufacturing engineering and quality requirements.
You will own a piece of hardware, for example, a sensor (there could be 3 or 4 different sensors) and manage the requirement of these by dealing with and communicating with the suppliers and various engineering groups to determine supplier capability and managing expectation with the engineering business on supplier capability.
This will involve:
- Liaising with suppliers to understand the functional performance capabilities of the selected control system hardware including sensors, actuators, filters, heat management, pumps and valves.
- Overseeing the suppliers programme of work; manage and report deviations from programme.
- Reviewing and approving the designs proposed by suppliers. Ensuring that the design meets the requirements and lessons learned on previous programmes are applied.
- Approving the suppliers functional and qualification test plans and reports.
- Supporting the integration of the units in the system and the testing of them.
- Supporting engine test bed running by providing acquired project specific control system knowledge. Analysing data to validate the control system design, investigate potential problems and propose appropriate solutions. Carrying out environmental testing of the units on the engine and analyse the results to validate the requirements.
- Approving the supplier’s DDP (declaration of design and performance) which records the certification evidence that all the technical requirements for a unit have been met. To produce certification documentation.
- Solving technical problems by creating a detailed plan of work to solve them, drive colleagues in other departments within RR and at the unit supplier to achieve the committed programme.
This role may also involve working on new engine programmes or existing projects to address service problems, or to reduce the cost of the engine. There will be some international travel to meet suppliers either in US or Europe on occasion.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills/abilities:
- Strong technical background required - specifically on control system hardware / electro-mechanical units.
- Control System Engineering background.
- Familiarity with classical control theory would be an advantage.
- Previous experience managing and dealing with suppliers.
- Programme management experience or knowledge.
- Have a degree in maths, physics or engineering. Relevant postgraduate experience is an advantage. Relevant experience is more important.
